The challenge

On mobile operating systems (iOS and Android), status bars effortlessly adapt their tint and contrast to whatever application is currently focused. On Linux desktops (GNOME Shell), the top bar is either a static solid bar or semi-transparent with harsh contrast collisions against maximized browser windows and IDEs.

The approach

We built Gnomatic as a native GJS / GNOME Shell extension that hooks into Mutter window manager signals. It dynamically extracts color hints from active window geometry and transitions the top panel with butter-smooth alpha animations without dropped display frames.
